What to do in the Upper Maremma

The chestnut tree forests that surround the village are perfect for nature lovers. The ruins of beautiful monuments like the Castle of Sassofortino, testament to a glorious medieval past, remain hidden in the woods, yet are easily reachable on foot from the village thanks to the numerous hiking trails that crisscross the the area.

The Upper Maremma is famous for its castles, such as the ones found at Montemassi or Belagaio, for its churches, like the beautiful Cathedral in Massa Marittima and the nearby abbey of San Galgano, for its unspoiled coastline and sandy beaaches, for the hot springs at Petriolo and for the numerous towns and villages that dot the hilltops of the countryside, like Roccastrada and Civitella Marittima. For all these reasons, Sassofortino makes a great starting point for visits to some of the most famous places in Tuscany, like Siena, Pisa, Montalcino, Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto.

For lovers of good food and fine wine, the area boasts many excellent restaurants. Sassofortino is located in the Monteregio di Massa Marittima D.O.C. wine region. There are many vineyards in the area where you can sample the wines and purchase directly from the producer.
